Treadmill training could help tots walk

ANN ARBOR, Mich.---Using a treadmill could help infants with prenatal complications or who were injured at birth walk earlier and better, according to a University of Michigan researcher.

Prenatal injuries can often result in self-correcting or fixable neuromotor delays, but sometimes toddlers get a more serious diagnosis, such as cerebral palsy, says Rosa Angulo-Barroso, associate professor of movement science at the U-M School of Kinesiology. Some of those diagnoses may come much later, or in mild cases, never, she says.

Angulo-Barroso and colleagues followed 15 infants at risk for neuromotor delays for two years and tested their changes in physical activity and treadmill-stepping in their homes. The infants were assisted using the treadmill by their parents.

The researchers looked at the frequency of steps and also the decrease in toe-walking over the two-year period. For those infants who were still not walking, they followed up by calling families to see if infants were walking by age 3.

They found that kids with neuromotor delays using the treadmill were on the same improving trajectory as normal kids. Of the 15 children, six were diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

"We found that in those with neuromotor delays, the pattern of development through time was parallel (but less) than normal kids." said Angulo-Barroso, who is also a research associate professor at the U-M Center for Human Growth and Development. "We also found less toe-walking, so foot placement improved."

The study also suggests a critical intervention window. Both children without a diagnosis and kids with cerebral palsy improved the most between 10 months and 18 months.

So what does this means for parents of children at risk for neuromotor delays?

"We are putting words of caution here," Angulo-Barroso said. "This is a feasibility study only and the results show it seems viable to do treadmill intervention."

A feasibility study merely shows that it warrants more work to see how much treadmill intervention helps. However, Angulo-Barroso stresses that in the meantime, parents should take other interventions seriously.

"Early interventions are really, really critical, so at this point I wouldn't tell them to go find a treadmill, but I would say make sure you get a good physical therapist and work with the physical therapist to see if your kids would be a good candidate for that kind of (treadmill) intervention," said Angulo-Barroso, who noted that the next study is a randomized sample of children to see how they respond to a formal treadmill intervention.

Well these should not be a problem now. All treadmills have programs for all individuals no matter what there fitness goals are. That treadmill we're talking about is the Sole F80 motorized treadmill. If you're not a new comer to the treadmill arena, then you'll love the more advanced features found on this machine. More than just an easy to use machine it comes with full stereo speakers to guide you through whatever kind of sounds you want to workout to. treadmillThe extra large running surface and one touch speed adjustment deliver maximum performance during the workout. It will serve you just as well and cost you thousands less.First of all, the frame of a commercial treadmill is made of a high alloy steel or aluminum, and is welded, as opposed to put together with nuts and bolts, like consumer grade equipment. This treadmill is also used in schools, heavy traffic gyms, hospitals and health clubs as this can cater all fitness levels and ages.

 "Could not be happier!" 2010-02-26
By Joseph Thomas
I have now bought Two of these HD LG Televisions, and the second was not to replace the first one i bought. Need i say more? This TV is simply amazing. Sound is awesome, picture quality is sharp and crisp and the gloss black finish it has, is so sexy. I'm a hardcore gamer and have out-grown my 19'' PC monitor so i decided to upgrade. I'm so glad i went with LG. I have both my PlayStation 3 and xbox 360 connected and this TV did not disappoint. HD movies looks sharp and crisp and with a great response time, there is no ghosting on fast paced action scenes. The only downside to this television is that my girlfriend fell in love with it, so in order for me to continue gaming with no interruptions, i had to purchase a second one for our bed room, which i just did. If you are on the fence about this HD TV, wait no longer, this is the one for you!

This is my 1w high powerled review

Not sure what to do with that huge wad of cash lying in your bedroom? You could always splurge it on this Ingo Maurer inspired LED table, and considering that it costs a good $23,175, it should do a fairly good job of reducing your pile of cash. The table sports a laminated safety glass on the top, not to mention 278 white LEDs which can emit light both ways. This LED table is powered by 48 volts DC, so you’ll need to keep it plugged in to stay juiced, and you’ll be able to use the external ballast for dimming. You have to admit, having dinner on a $23k LED table would certainly be an interesting experience, though you’d probably get bored of it real fast.

An ever-changing LED display makes for an interesting show. An LED table powered by tweets makes the light show that much more exciting. This Twitter-enabled device builds on a previous project which had uses 81 RGB LED modules in a 9×9 grid arranged atop an IKEA coffee table.

The “Live Twitter Table” extends the multi-colored LED display by adding a Bluetooth Arduino Shield which wirelessly connects to a nearby MacBook Pro. The table is controlled by tweets broadcast with the #ledtable hashtag and formatted with pixel coordinates for the LED matrix.  A Twitter interface code parses the incoming Twitter posts and transmits it via Bluetooth to the Arduino microcontroller. A continuous stream of Tweets sets up the changing display on the LED table.

Macetech details the entire project from the stage of putting together an IKEA coffee table with LED grid including the source code. For your own LED project, you can try hooking up several wireless devices to a central computer and have them display your own LED designs.

MIAMI – Florida International University is creating a database of fluent Haitian Creole speakers willing to volunteer their time to help with a number of ongoing efforts to support South Florida’s Haitian community in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated Haiti last month.

Interpreters are needed right away to assist the College of Law’s Carlos A. Costa Immigration and Human Rights Clinic as it helps Haitian immigrants apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). FIU also is responding to a number of requests from its community partners who need Creole interpreters.

This need became evident during the first meeting of the FIU Haiti Relief Task Force, a group of leaders from around the university brought together by FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg for the purpose of coordinating the short, mid- and long-term efforts of the university in response to the Haiti disaster.

Throughout FIU, various departments are identifying and harnessing the knowledge and skills of faculty, staff and students to address the medical, infrastructure and other relief and recovery needs for Haiti. FIU also is committed to assisting its students with ties to Haiti who are experiencing hardship as a result of the earthquake.

The task force’s chairwoman and coordinator, Senior Vice President for External Relations Sandra Gonzalez-Levy, said she was impressed with the number of efforts already under way and wants to support them by creating a centralized database of Creole speakers that can be called upon to assist on different projects over the next few weeks and months.

“We have a very generous university community that wants to help, including eager students who were quick to respond to the call for relief” Gonzalez-Levy said. “This committee will support and amplify those efforts by identifying resources, leveraging partnerships and facilitating information.”

College of Law Dean Alex Acosta explained that the TPS application process is quite detailed and it is imperative that law students and faculty who volunteer to help local Haitians fill out the paperwork have the support of fluent Creole speakers as interpreters.

“We need reliable interpretation because people’s right to obtain TPS status hangs in the balance,” Acosta said. “I’m certain that within the university community we have the people to fill this need.”

Anyone interested in volunteering may fill out the form on the FIU Hope for Haiti:Doing Our Part website. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and other members of the South Florida community are welcome.
